NT Road Trip 2015: Part 24

Lajamanu finish

Fences are always good sites for birds.

Galahs Eolophus rosiecapilla
Magpie-lark Grallina cyanoleuca
Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles miles
The north Australian race of Masked Lapwing, miles, differs from our southern variety, novohollandiae. The facial features vary.

Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles novohollandiae
miles has the yellow pigmentation extending behind the eye and it is split along the top of the head. On novohollandiae, the pigmentation does not extend behind the eye, it seems to join across the top of the head and there is a black line of feathers in front of shoulder running to the black neck.
